SCHOOL PROFILE 2008-2009
Keene High School is located in a diversified industrial community of 22,400.
Keene State College (a liberal arts college) and Antioch New England Graduate School
are located in the city. Keene High School is the largest high school in southwestern N.H.
with a student enrollment of approximately 1,830. KHS includes grades 9-12, serving students
from Chesterfield, Harrisville, Keene, Marlborough, Marlow, Nelson, Spofford, Stoddard,
West Chesterfield, Westmoreland, and Winchester. The Cheshire Career Center, attached to
the high school, services more than 630 students from five area high schools including Keene.

Accreditation

Keene High School is accredited by the New Hampshire Department of Education
and the New England Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

Guidance and Counseling
The Guidance Department at Keene High School is comprised of a Guidance Director,
six School Counselors and a Personal Counselor. The counselor-student ratio is 1:275.
The services of two full-time School Psychologists and part-time Substance Abuse
Prevention Counselor are also available to students.

Graduation Requirements

A Keene High School diploma is issued to students
who satisfactorily complete the following criteria:
1. Four years of attendance.
2. Accumulation of prescribed number of credits by year of graduation.
3. All state-mandated credits completed.

Classes
Keene High School is on a modified block schedule.
Four blocks are scheduled for each day and last for 87 minutes.
Courses are offered in 5 distinct formats: Full year (2 credits);
Semester (1 credit); A/B full year which meet every other day (1 credit);
A/B semester which meet every other day (1/2 credit); and Semester
plus A/B semester for advanced science courses(1.5 credits).


Course Offerings
Keene High School offers over 200 courses in a wide variety of academic and technical areas such
as advanced placement, honors and accelerated courses, programs for students with diverse learning needs
and vocational programs at the Cheshire Career Center. The variety of courses allow students to select
subjects that address their strengths, interests and expand their educational opportunities. Offerings include
Advanced Placements, Honors, Comprehensive, and Foundation courses which allow students to be
challenged at their level of ability. Technology and Internet access are available in each classroom
and several computer labs are open for student use.


Course Levels

AP: Designated on transcript by AP. Advanced Placement (English, Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Psychology, Physics, French, Spanish, Environmental Science, European and U.S. History)
Honors: Designated on transcript by (Honor) or (H). Placement requires prior teacher recommendation. Offers a rigorous educational environment for students who have exhibited high academic achievement. Students will be required to analyze and synthesize information using higher-order thinking skills.
Comprehensive: Comprehensive courses can be identified by the lack of specific designation after the course title. These are challenging academic courses designed to prepare students for post-secondary options such as two and four year colleges and technical institutes.
Foundation: Designated on transcript by (Found) or (F). These courses offer students the opportunity to increase competencies in basic and critical skills as well as providing significant enrichment. Placement is determined by recommendation/referral.

Grading System

Class Rank Computation of rank is done in accordance with the guidelines of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. It is a weighted rank calculated for AP and Honors courses in English, math, science, social studies, and world languages.
